So, How Do Vinyl Records Work? Sound waves are first recorded and carved into a lacquer round with a lathe. The lacquer is used to produce a master which then stamps vinyl record copies. Sound is then reproduced when the stylus from your turntable runs across the ridges, or grooves, in the vinyl. The stylus then produces an electrical current that is sent to your amplifier.
