35 Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own | Best Vinyl Albums You Should Own

So it’s happened, right? You got a turntable for christmas or your birthday or maybe even you just bought one for yourself. You have already bought the small handful of your favorite albums and now you are not sure what’s next. You, like most have fallen in love with the sound of your new setup and the warmth of your favorite albums on vinyl but you’re lost. Maybe you found yourself Googling “Best vinyl records”. Well we get it we’ve all been there!

Now, let’s get some stuff out there before we get rolling. Best vinyl records to own can be divisive and very subjective. This is a topic that no matter who you ask the answer will be different. Likely if you asked 50 people you would receive 50 different answers.

So, let’s talk a little bit about how we compiled this list. This is not just a list of our favorites, that’s for another post. This is a list compiled from some general data based on popularity, unique features, quality, and much more. Our main requirements are that these albums have to be special in some way. Something that makes them stand out enough that you would say they are the best vinyl records to own. The last requirements are no soundtracks unless they are original works and no artist can have more than one album on the list. We only kind of broke one rule.

What Are The Best Vinyl Records To Own? What Are The Albums To Own On Vinyl?

Radiohead – In Rainbows

In Rainbows is the seventh studio album by English rock band Radiohead, released on 10 October 2007 by XL Recordings. Why It Is One Of The Top Vinyl Records To Own

Not only is this my personal favorite Radiohead album, we consider it to be one of the greatest records of all time, but it is a pivotal album for the band marking a transition in their sound. We think you need this album in your record collection because the art and cover art is fantastic (especially in the box set), it’s a great album, and it’s a piece of music history. It was the first major band’s album to be released digitally in the “Pay What You Wish” model. Making it an interesting piece all around.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

We think this is one of the must have albums to own on vinyl because it is a classic example of an album you should listen to as a single piece. While it clearly contains multiple songs with different sounds the story of the album flows through it. Usually pressed on a double LP there is plenty of clarity in the album with typical awesome artwork from Queens of the Stone Age.

J. Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive

Why It Is One Of The Best Records On Vinyl

This is one of our favorite Hip-Hop albums over here at VinylBro. While some people may not agree with some lyrical content or depictions they are told through the lens of life experiences from Kendrick himself. This album was the first non-jazz or classical work to receive a Pulitzer Prize for Music meaning you are owning a small piece of hip hop history with this album.

Childish Gambino – Camp

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own

The stories told by Gambino are second to none. Gambino has a way of immersing you into anything he’s talking about. Camp being his debut album made for a fantastic entry point for Gambino to show the world he (Donald Glover) his talent and unique style. Without a doubt you need this album on vinyl.

My Morning Jacket – Z

My Morning Jacket’s Z is a masterpiece of an album. It is the band’s fourth album, and was released in 2005. The album was the first not recorded in frontman Jim James’ home studio in Louisville, Kentucky.

Z is an experimental rock album that features elements of psychedelic rock, folk rock, and country rock. The album’s title refers to the final letter of the alphabet, and symbolizes the band’s creative growth and evolution.

Z received critical acclaim upon its release, with many critics calling it My Morning Jacket’s best to date. The band embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album, which included headline performances at major festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

Fun fact this is the album Stan from American Dad listened to over and over in the episode in which My Morning Jacket was featured. There’s a really great story behind how the band got to be on the show involving the 2008 Bonnaroo festival. If you are curious, the episode is season 6 episode 7 or episode 84. The album itself is very whimsical and atmospheric, a music listen.

Tool – Fear Inoculum

Fear Inoculum is an ambitious album that clocks in at over an hour long. It is a slow-burning record that slowly builds tension and unease. The lyrics are cryptic and mysterious, hinting at dark themes of fear, paranoia, and isolation. The music is dense and complex, making it difficult to immediately digest. But despite its challenging nature, Fear Inoculum is a rewarding listen that rewards multiple listens.

Tool has always been a band that challenges their listeners. Fear Inoculum is no different.

Why It Is One Of The Best Records On Vinyl

The first release from Tool in 13 years. Do we really need to say more? Tool always impresses with its music, art work, and packaging. Generally no expense is spares and Fear Inoculum is no different. They have a standard release and a really cool boxset to check out.

Fleetwood Mac – Rumours

Fleetwood Mac is one of the most successful bands of all time. They have sold more than 100 million records and have won multiple Grammy Awards. Rumours, their eleventh studio album, is often considered their best work. The album was a commercial and critical success, spending several weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own

This is just one of those albums everyone needs in their collection. Most people have it and it’s considered standard to most collections. This album is all about the music. The album cover, packaging, and artwork are nothing really to write home about. There are tons of color variations of this album as it has been reissued several times.

Stranger Things Season 1 Soundtrack

Stranger Things as a whole is an overarching success. One of the greatest things about the show is its soundtrack. The soundtracks for Stranger Things were composed by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the band S U R V I V E. It was released on vinyl, CD, and digital download on July 15, 2016, by Lakeshore Records and Invada Records.

The soundtrack received critical acclaim. Critics praised its 1980s retro style and its ability to capture the show’s atmosphere and setting. It was nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media at the 2017 Grammy Awards, losing to La La Land.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

Now we know we made the rule of no soundtracks. We changed the rule specifically for Stranger Things as it presents a unique exception. The albums are not a traditional example of soundtracks as this is all original work. We think having any of the seasons on vinyl is a worthy investment. The atmospheric synth and original music just has a way of letting you escape into it.

Deftones – White Pony

It’s been 20+ years since the Deftones released their groundbreaking third album, White Pony. The record was a game-changer for the band, and solidified their place as one of the most important rock bands of the 21st century.

Looking back, it’s easy to see why White Pony was such a success. The record saw the Deftones expanding their sound, incorporating elements of trip-hop and electronica into their already brutal brand of metal. The result was an album that sounded like nothing else at the time, and still holds up today as one of the essential albums of the past two decades.

Why It Is One Of The Best Albums On Vinyl

The album marked a massive shift in the band’s style and sound. Largely accepted as the band’s most matured sound from the 2 prior, this album was a huge hit. Many people consider this album tops in Deftones. We personally enjoy everything Chino does here at VinylBro but that is a whole other topic!

Dr. Dre – The Chronic

Dr. Dre’s The Chronic is a classic album that changed the landscape of hip hop. Released in 1992, The Chronic introduced the world to Dr. Dre’s unique production style and helped launch the careers of Snoop Dogg and Warren G.

The Chronic is widely considered to be one of the best hip hop albums of all time, and it is certainly one of the most influential. Dr. Dre’s innovative production helped to redefine what was possible in hip hop, and his work on The Chronic paved the way for future classics like Tupac’s All Eyez on Me.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own

This album, like many other albums on this list, is one that is just such a landmark in its genre that you kind of have to own it. Hip hop on vinyl is like no other genre. The sound and bass resonate so well that it’s a bit indescribable. The Chronic is no different.

The Beatles – Abbey Road

Abbey Road is the eleventh album by English rock band the Beatles, released on 26 September 1969. The recording sessions for the album were the last in which all four Beatles participated. Although Let It Be was the final album that the Beatles completed before the band’s dissolution in April 1970, most of the album had been recorded before the group’s self-imposed break-up.

The album was an immediate commercial and critical success upon its release. It topped charts in several countries and is often considered to be one of the greatest of all time. Abbey Road is a timeless classic that continues to influence musicians today.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

Abbey Road includes one of the most famous cover photos ever taken: The Fab Four crossing a London street. But while that image has become an indelible part of pop culture, it almost didn’t happen. The original plan was for each Beatle to be photographed separately against a white background and then have those photos composite into a single image.

We think this album not only looks great but also seems to sound better on vinyl from the warmth gained from the medium.

Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon

Since its release in 1973, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon has been one of the most popular and influential albums of all time. The album’s themes of mental illness, greed, and death have resonated with fans for generations. The Dark Side of the Moon is also notable for its innovative use of sound effects and experimental production techniques. Despite its dark subject matter, the album is also full of beautiful and catchy melodies that have helped make it one of the most iconic albums in rock history.

Why It Is One Of The Best Albums on Vinyl

This album is somewhat a meme at this point. It is so typical in vinyl collections that there are even some subreddits that love to poke fun at it. All joking aside though this is a solid album and the clarity and warmth brought forward in vinyl form is just untouchable compared to the other mediums. If you don’t have this in your collection we think you should.

Alice In Chains – Dirt

Alice In Chains has been one of the most successful and influential American rock bands of the past few decades. Formed in 1987, the band rose to fame with their first album Facelift in 1990, and became one of the key players in the Seattle grunge scene alongside Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Their second album, Dirt, was released in 1992 and is widely considered to be one of the greatest grunge albums. The album was a commercial and critical success, debuting at #6 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over 2 million copies in the US.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own

The album is notable for its dark and personal lyrics, which deal with topics such as addiction, abuse, depression, and suicide. Despite its heavy subject matter, Dirt is an incredibly powerful and moving album that has had a profound impact on both fans and critics alike.

Iron Maiden – The Number of The Beast

Iron Maiden released The Number of The Beast in 1982 and it was an immediate commercial and critical success. The album is often cited as one of the most influential heavy metal albums.

The Number of The Beast was a departure from Iron Maiden’s earlier sound, with the band moving towards a more explicitly commercial and accessible direction. This new sound was a major factor in the album’s success, with the band’s fan base growing significantly.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

Let’s face it, who doesn’t have a little Eddie Munson love? This was his favorite band, need we say more? The album’s title track is one of the most iconic and well-known songs in heavy metal, with its catchy riff and dark subject matter. The song helped to cement Iron Maiden’s reputation as one of the premier heavy metal bands, and it remains a staple of their live shows to this day.

Led Zeppelin – IV

IV is the fourth album by English rock band Led Zeppelin, released on 8 November 1971 by Atlantic Records. It was produced by guitarist Jimmy Page and recorded between December 1970 and February 1971, mostly at Island Studios in London. The album was a commercial success, reaching number one on charts in the UK and US, and has since been regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Why It Is One Of The Best Albums on Vinyl

IV solidified Zeppelin as one of the all time greatest rock bands to exist. Black Dog, Stairway to Heaven, and Rock and Roll are still played on radio stations across the globe to this very day. And who could forget the massive drums from John Bonham on When The Levee Breaks? Although technically untitled, IV is unique in the Zeppelin catalog in its own right and ranked consistently in all time greatest album lists across the internet and various physical print publications. It is worthy of any collection for its influence across all of rock and roll.

Rammstein – Zeit

One of the most prolific industrial metal bands in the world, Rammstein is back with their latest album Zeit. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this album since rumors of it began circulating almost a year before release. Rammstein’s eighth album, Zeit, was released in April 2022.

Rammstein has made a name for themselves throughout the years with their unique blend of hard rock, heavy metal and electronic music. This album follows in that same vein but offers something more than just an ordinary metal sound. It features raw, intense vocals and aggressive guitar playing coupled with pulsing rhythms and synth-driven melodies to create an immersive experience that will leave listeners begging for more.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own

If you want an album with great music, great artwork and quality packaging, then this is your album. Rammstein did not disappoint with this one, you get it all. The artwork is stunning images of an industrial area. The packaging itself is super high quality. The pressing itself is a stellar example of German pressed vinyl, high quality and dead silent. Highly recommend grabbing this one.

Nirvana – Unplugged

On November 18, 1993, Nirvana took the stage at Sony Music Studios in New York City for an acoustic performance for MTV Unplugged. The setlist included several of the band’s hits, as well as a cover of Lead Belly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” The performance was released as an album in 1994 and won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged set is widely considered to be one of the best live performances of all time. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was in top form, delivering emotionally charged renditions of songs like “About a Girl” and “All Apologies.” The band was also joined by guests such as Pat Smear, who added their own unique touches to the already stellar performance.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

So much has been said about Nirvana that we won’t attempt to add much here at VinylBro. What we will add is that the Nirvana Unplugged album is a must have. The album includes cover songs as well as acoustic takes on Nirvana classics that rival their original counterparts. This live album shows the band at their best: live, raw, and unapologetic. Look no further than the band’s take on Lake of Fire by the Meat Puppets.

Whether you choose the single LP or one of the various double vinyl editions, this album simply doesn’t disappoint. Recorded mere months before Cobain’s death, standout tracks include Where Did You Sleep Last Night, The Man Who Sold the World, Pennyroyal Tea, and On a Plain. At VinylBro we would argue that it is easily top 3 Unplugged performances ever.

Nirvana – In Utero

Nirvana’s In Utero was released on September 13, 1993, by DGC Records. The album was Nirvana’s third and final album. The album was produced by Steve Albini, who had previously worked with the band on their 1991 album, “Nevermind.” “In Utero” was a departure from the pop-oriented sound of “Nevermind,” and featured a more abrasive and experimental sound.

Nirvana recorded “In Utero” in early 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota. The band worked with producer Steve Albini, who had previously worked with them on their 1991 album, “Nevermind.

Why It Is One Of The Best Albums on Vinyl

Yes, this is the second Nirvana album on our list but its there for good reason. In Utero is the quintessential Nirvana album for us at VinylBro. Kurt Cobain famously disliked the sleek production of Nevermind and wanted a radically different sound for the band on the follow up to the album that made them a household name.

There are a few versions of this album available. Most commonly you will find the 2013 mix of the album and the standard reissue. While the 2013 mix is a remix and great in its own right, we find the original to be ultimately superior. Although the standard reissue is a single LP, the quality of the vinyl is superb as are the dynamics in the music. Whichever version you choose, it is sure to leave you wondering what could have been had Kurt lived. Standout tracks: Scentless Apprentice, Dumb, Very Ape, and All Apologies.

Jimi Hendrix – Are You Experienced

In the late 1960s, Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential electric guitarists in rock music. His first album, Are You Experienced, showcased his unique style and ability to create innovative sounds with his instrument. Though Hendrix only released three studio albums during his lifetime, his impact on the rock genre is still felt today.

Few musicians have made as big of an impact in such a short amount of time as Jimi Hendrix. In just four years, he went from being a relatively unknown musician to one of the most famous and influential guitarists in the world. His unique style of playing, which combined elements of rock, blues, and jazz, was unlike anything that had been heard before.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

What do Jimi Hendrix have in common with the Beatles? They’ve been written about ad nauseam. But just because an artist is popular to the masses doesn’t mean they don’t live up to the hype. Most vinyl editions of Are You Experienced? come in a standard single jacket. There are too many pressings to list here, but be sure to grab any pressing by the Experience Hendrix label. They use all analog sources and are absolutely stunning in sonic detail.

The best part? Copies of the album are widely available and many retailers list them for under $20.00. Some of us at VinylBro feel Electric Ladyland is the better album, but that album simply wouldn’t be possible without Are You Experienced? VinylBro picks: Manic Depression, The Wind Cries Mary, and Third Stone from the Sun.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the most iconic and influential rock bands of all time. They’ve been making music for over three decades and show no signs of slowing down. Their 1999 album, Californication, is widely considered to be one of their best works. It’s a complex and layered record that deals with themes of love, loss, addiction, and redemption.

Californication the track is perhaps its most well-known song. It’s a beautiful and haunting ballad that captures the feeling of longing for something that may never be attained. The lyrics are both sad and hopeful, perfectly capturing the duality of the human experience.

After One Hot Minute failed to make an impression with many listeners, the Red Hot Chili Peppers came back with perhaps the greatest album of their career. With guitarist John Frusciante back in the fold, the band had their now-classic lineup and wrote such classics as Scar Tissue, Around the World, and Otherside.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own

It’s pure and unadulterated Red Hot Chili Peppers. The vinyl is mastered beautifully compared to its loud and brick-walled CD/digital counterpart (but that’s a conversation for another day). While the physical packaging lacks a gatefold sleeve, the inner sleeves on most editions of this album are of high quality and the lyric insert adds a nice touch. This double LP showcases that unmistakable funky bass by Flea so well that it’s like hearing the band for the first time again. VinylBro standouts: Around the World, Get on Top, Emit Remmus, and This Velvet Glove

Tyler Childers – Purgatory

Tyler Childers, the country singer and songwriter from Kentucky, has released a record that is sure to be remembered for years to come. His album, Purgatory, captures the unique sounds of Appalachia and conveys a cutting-edge take on traditional themes.

Why It Is One Of The Top Vinyl Records To Own

Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness

It’s been over two decades since Smashing Pumpkins released their groundbreaking double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The record was a commercial and critical success, cementing the band’s place as one of the most important alt-rock groups of the 1990s.

Mellon Collie was a departure from the Pumpkins’ previous albums, both in terms of its length and its sound. The record was a more complex and ambitious work than anything the band had done before, with frontman Billy Corgan pushing himself to new creative heights.

The album’s massive success took the band by surprise, and they found themselves struggling to deal with their newfound fame. The pressure took a toll on Corgan, who began to suffer from anxiety and depression.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

Double albums tend to be overly long, grandiose, and flop commercially, but Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is an exception. Perhaps the band’s biggest statement in its storied career, this album simply cannot be ignored.

Tonight, Tonight and 1979 are two of the band’s biggest hits and remain standouts on the 28 track album. Powerhouse drumming by Jimmy Chamberlin meets raw and abrasive guitars perfectly balanced with dry, eloquent, and unique vocals by Billy Corgan.

VinylBro recommends this box set if only for the songs Jellybelly, Here Is No Why, Where Boys Fear to Tread, and Thru the Eyes of Ruby. If you’re craving more of that Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness sound, check out their compilation box set of Mellon Collie era singles “The Aeroplane Flies High”.

The vinyl edition of this classic is spread across 4 LPs and comes housed in a lavish box set with two accompanying booklets including lyrics and artwork. The physical package is a sight to behold and would surely be a remarkable addition to any record collection.

Pearl Jam – Ten

It’s been over 30 years since Pearl Jam released their debut album, Ten. The album was an instant hit, selling over 13 million copies in the United States alone. It spawned a number of hit singles, including “Alive”, “Even Flow”, and “Jeremy”.

Ten was a critical success as well, earning Pearl Jam a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. It has since been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time by publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.

In the years since its release, Ten has become synonymous with Pearl Jam. It’s the album that made them superstars, and it’s still their best-selling album to date. If you’re a fan of Pearl Jam, then Ten is a must-have in your collection.

Why It Is One Of The Top Vinyl Records To Own

The album that started it all for Pearl Jam. Much like our review for Are You Experienced?, you wouldn’t have the other 90’s Pearl Jam classics without this album. It’s why we chose it for our must own records. Like so many other records, the most common version of this you will find at your local store is a single LP. But don’t let that deter you from owning a copy of this album!

Similar to Nirvana’s In Utero, the remixed version of this album is still available but does not match the original. Although the album clocks in at over 50 minutes, we assure you these common pressings are dynamic and well worth the price. Copies of this album are readily available for under $20 at many shops. Essential tracks: Even Flow, Black, Jeremy, and Garden.

Eminem – Marshall Mathers LP

Eminem’s album, Marshall Mathers LP, was released in May of 2000. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It is Eminem’s best-selling album to date, with over eight million copies sold in the United States.

The album features some of Eminem’s most famous tracks, including “Stan,” “The Real Slim Shady,” and “The Way I Am.” The album helped to solidify Eminem’s place in the hip-hop world, and cemented his reputation as one of the most talented and controversial rappers of all time.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Records To Own

The Marshall Mathers LP is simply one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made. It made Eminem a superstar. But you already know this. This album should be in everyones record collection if only for the bass and stellar production from Dr. Dre. The bass resonates deep and the vocals are crisp and clear without that annoying sibilance that drives audiophiles crazy. Much of the hip hop genre is known to be deliberately lo-fi and without much focus on clarity, but this album on vinyl is a rare sonic marvel. Unfortunately, this double LP release comes in a single jacket, but the sound quality alone makes up for the lacking physical presentation. VinylBro favorites: the entire album.

Weezer – Pinkerton

Few albums are as divisive as Weezer’s Pinkerton. Released in 1996 to a lukewarm response, it took years for the album to find its audience. But when it did, it became a cult classic, and is now widely considered one of the best of the ‘90s.

What makes Pinkerton so special? Part of it is its honesty. Where Weezer’s debut album was full of catchy power-pop songs, Pinkerton is introspective and vulnerable, exploring frontman Rivers Cuomo’s feelings of isolation and loneliness. It’s an emotionally complex album that wears its heart on its sleeve, and that resonated with listeners who felt like outsiders themselves.

Why It Is One Of The Best Vinyl Albums To Own

While the bands first album brought them fame, the response the band received for its followup, Pinkerton, supposedly made frontman Rivers Cuomo hate the album altogether. Highly misunderstood when it was released, Pinkerton grew to be something almost larger than life through word of mouth and is the favorite album of many Weezer fans to this day. And for good reason.

Pinkerton is classic Weezer, after all and there isn’t another album like it in their extensive catalog. The self-loathing, emotional, and reflective lyrical content is arguably responsible for the popularity of emo bands in the early to mid 2000’s. And dare we say: those emo bands wouldn’t be who they are today without this album. The album can easily be found in most stores but we recommend the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab pressing if you can find it.

Their pressing is well regarded for its fidelity and its jacket presentation which includes a quality inner sleeve for long term storage. But don’t worry if you can’t track down a copy. The album was well produced and common pressings of this album sound sublime regardless of which pressing you choose.
